A Dogs Best Friend by Birr, Krakauer, and Osiander
[]
  • This is a journey to the roots of an ancient partnership between dog and man. Visit the lives of dogs in places like Borneo, Patagonia, Namibia, Nepal, and Greenland.
  • Baldy of Nome by Esther Birdsall Darling
    []
  • Copyright 1916, this is an oldie, but goodie. Many of these "classics" can be found on the internet if you look for them.
  • Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
    []
  • Last year, a teacher emailed me suggesting I read this children's chapter book. I was quite busy and didn't have time to pursue it but this spring, as I browsed the bookstore, I stumbled upon it in the childrens' section... and I'm glad I did!
  • Born to Pull by Bob Cary
    []
  • This is a BEAUTIFUL book. The illustrations by Gail de Marcken are amazing. The life of a sled dog is through her sensitive watercolors. A perfect book for kids of all ages. Teaches you everything about mushing.
  • Call of the Wild by Jack London
    []
  • Jack London was called the "Kipling of the Klondike" for his rich stories about the Arctic frontier. This is a classic dog book.
  • Colter by Rick Bass
    []
  • For hunters and dog lovers both, Rick Bass writes about "the best dog I ever had" named Colter. You'll feel like your out there in the field with Bass and Colter, sharing a blue-skied, breezy Montana fall day. Yummy.
  • Dogsong by Gary Paulsen
    []
  • Used far and wide in most middle schools following the Iditarod.
  • Honest Dogs by
    []

  • Iditarod Classics by Lew Freedman
    []
  • Lew Freedman's Iditarod books are always well-researched and well-written. Dr. Terry Adkins, DVM, my mushing mentor, is "Chapter 13" of this book. These are the tales of the trails as told by the mushers themselves.
  • Iditarod Dreams by Lew Freedman and DeeDee Jonrowe
    [www.epicenterpress.com]
  • A look into DeeDee's life and kennel. Epicenter Press is a good place to find books about Iditarod and the "Great North."
  • Iditarod Memories by Jon and Jona Van Zyle
    []
  • A collection of popular Alaskan artist, Jon Van Zyle's first 25 annual posters created for the Iditarod. Jona Van Zyle tells the story behind each poster.
  • Kazaan, the Wolf Dog by James Oliver Curwood
    []
  • James Oliver Curwood has several books with dogs and sled dogs as a theme. Copyright 1914, it's an old but fun read.
  • My Dog Skip by Willie Morris
    []
  • I rarely get to say this but I'll say it here, "I liked the movie even better!" Read the book first and then enjoy the movie. Make sure to have a box of Kleenex close at hand.
  • Old Dog Cora and the Christmas Tree
    []
  • My Aunt Dot found this gem-of-a-book at a library sale. She knows I collect dog books and most of my unusual ones come from her. The woodcuts are luscious and colorful. The author and artist is Consie Powell.
  • Race Across Alaska by Libby Riddles
    []
  • First woman to win Iditarod tells her story.
  • Silversheene, King of Sled Dogs by Clarence Hawkes
    []
  • I collect dog books of all types and I love old ones like Silversheene. Sled dogs were often the subject of books in the early 1900's, romanticizing the "Great White North" and the people who lived there.
  • Sled Dog Trails by Mary Shields
    []
  • Written by the first woman to complete the Iditarod.
  • Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner
    []
  • An often-used book in grade school Iditarod classrooms.
  • The Bravest Dog Ever, the True Story of Balto by Natalie Standif
    []
  • For GRADES 1-3, this book is pretty popular with the kids. I know many dogs across the country named "Balto" because of the book and movies. Nice pictures too.
  • Toyon, a Dog of the North and His People by Nicholas Kalashnikof
    []
  • Copyright 1950, I haven't seen this book around many bookshelves. Worth looking for.
  • Walter, the Farting Dog by Kotzwinkle, Murray, Colman
    []
  • What more can I say? One of my favorite children's books with a great story and 100% original illustrations.
  • White Fang by Jack London
    []
  • Many students have seen the movie but haven't read the book. Another London classic.
  • Winterdance by Gary Paulsen
    []
  • This is the book that I read that made me want to become a musher and a writer. Often used in high schools following Iditarod, many teachers read chapters of it aloud to younger students.
  • Yukon Alone by John Balzar
    []
  • An interesting travel/adventure book about the other 1,000-mile dog sled race, the Yukon Quest. A high school or "adult" read.
  • Yukon Challenge by John Firth
    []
  • A new one to me! Someone just sent it to me. Looks like a pretty good story and history of the Yukon Quest sled Dog Race.
